WeThinkCode_, South Africa’s leading tech specialisation academy, has partnered with Meta to integrate AI developer tools across its national training network. The partnership brings Meta’s Llama AI tools and learning content directly into WeThinkCode_’s curriculum, while engaging 1,800+ students and alumni in capstone projects and a live Innovation Challenge focused on AI-powered healthcare solutions.
Since launching in August 2025, WeThinkCode_ has been integrating Meta’s developer tools and AI modules into its software development training model. To ensure effective rollout, this approach is being piloted with student performance team support from four campuses, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and our two partner TVET Colleges, before scaling to all remaining WeThinkCode_ campuses. In addition, we have enhanced our specialised elective tracks, including Blockchain, Data Engineering, and Mobile Development, among others, giving students hands-on experience in building practical AI-powered applications, such as:
- AI Chatbot for Ride Booking
- Smart Contract Auditing Assistant
- AI Test Case Generator
- Intelligent API Orchestration Tool
- Data Quality Analyser
This helps students develop essential skills, including prompt engineering and instructional design capabilities, as well as the ability to integrate retrieval systems with large language models (LLMs). Students gain a deeper understanding of AI pipelines and the workflows involved in data-to-generation processes. Additionally, they learn to critically evaluate AI outputs while grounding their work in real data. Ultimately, this training equips them with the capability to customize and deploy AI solutions effectively within real business contexts. This validates WeThinkCode_’s strategy to bring scalable AI training infrastructure to the continent and to build a sustainable pipeline of AI-literate talent.
As part of this pilot, two flagship capstone projects are in final testing and ready for rollout:
- Bula Books – a reading comprehension app powered by Meta Llama that helps children read for meaning.
- GameCode – a gamified platform teaching coding fundamentals through interactive gameplay.
Both projects have been deployed to over 800 students and alumni for testing and feedback.
Innovation Challenge: Build with Meta Llama AI
Together with Meta, WeThinkCode_ hosted an Innovation Challenge that sought AI-powered applications that break down barriers to make quality healthcare information accessible, understandable, and actionable for every patient and clinician.
“We are proud to support this important work and the academy’s mission to cultivate a robust pipeline of AI talent across Africa. Our partnership with WeThinkCode_ reflects Meta’s broader commitment to expanding access to high-quality AI resources, enabling young developers to learn, innovate, and deploy solutions with confidence. By integrating Meta’s developer tools into the curriculum and engaging students through the Innovation Challenge, we are empowering the next generation of developers to create practical, scalable solutions that are accessible and impactful for all.”

Healthcare systems continue to face challenges in delivering efficient, inclusive, and patient-centred care. Patients often struggle to navigate appointments, understand procedures, and access medical records securely. Clinicians spend a significant amount of time on manual documentation and administrative tasks
The Build with Meta Llama AI Innovation Challenge leverages WeThinkCode_’s community of over 1,800 students and alumni to collaboratively develop healthcare solutions with real deployment potential.
Teams were challenged to design and build an AI-powered app that uses Meta’s Llama AI to simplify patient and clinician interactions with healthcare information. Participating teams created practical, inclusive, and scalable solutions that demonstrated AI’s potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery.
Winners received a cash prize, comprehensive mentorship, industry recognition, and potential incubation support to bring their innovation to market.
“Our partnership with Meta is about more than embedding AI into the classroom; it’s about equipping young developers to tackle real-world challenges, from education to healthcare. By combining cutting-edge tools with community-driven innovation, we are shaping a generation of developers who will transform Africa’s digital future,” said Ruvimbo Gwatirisa, Director of Partnerships at WeThinkCode_.
